Common splits

People and ratio per group

Ratio 1 is the baseline. 1.5 pays 1.5×, 0 pays nothing (e.g. the guest of honor).

How to set the ratios

It is easiest to treat a regular member as 1. Senior people are often set to 1.2–1.6 and juniors or students to 0.5–0.8. Keep the highest ratio within about twice the baseline so nobody feels singled out.

Set the guest of honor at a welcome or farewell party to 0, and their share is spread over everyone else by ratio. You can also use 0.5–0.8 for people who don't drink or join late.

Round each amount to a unit that is easy to collect. Rounding up leaves a small surplus the organizer can keep for next time; rounding down leaves a shortfall, so decide in advance who covers it.

Once you have the amounts, add them to the end of your announcement so collecting on the day takes seconds. Opening this tool from a schedule's admin page fills in the number of people for the best date.

Example

8 people, total 400, ratios 1.6 / 1.2 / 1 / 0.6, rounded up to 1.

FAQ

QWhat ratios are typical?

With a regular member as 1, senior people are often around 1.5, managers around 1.2 and juniors 0.5–0.7. It depends on the group, so if unsure, check with the most senior person first.

QHow do I make the guest of honor free?

Set the ratio of their row to 0. Their share is split among everyone else by ratio. The “Guest of honor free” button switches to a guest row and an everyone-else row.

QWho covers the rounding difference?

Rounding up leaves a surplus and rounding down leaves a shortfall. The amount is shown under the result, so say in your message how it will be handled.

QIs anything I enter saved?

No. The calculation runs only on this screen; amounts and counts are not sent or stored anywhere.

QCan I use it with a schedule?

Open it from “Split the bill” on a schedule's admin page and it starts with the number of people who marked ○ on the best date.
